COPEWELL – Community Resilience Modeling

Summary

The COPEWELL (Composite of Post-Event Well-being) model is a conceptual and computational system dynamics framework designed to predict community resilience in the face of natural and man-made disasters. It distinguishes two core dimensions of resilience: resistance (the ability to withstand disruption without significant loss of function) and recovery (the rate at which function is restored over time). By capturing the complex interdependencies among infrastructure, social systems, and health domains, the model simulates the time course of community functioning after a disruptive event. Its outputs help identify specific factors that influence both resistance and recovery, thereby guiding strategic planning to enhance overall resilience.
