JHU CSSE COVID-19 Dashboard

Summary

In January 2020 Dr. Gardner and her former student, Ensheng Dong, introduced an interactive web-based dashboard to track all COVID-19 cases worldwide. This dashboard, hosted in Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University, visualized and tracked reported COVID-19 cases, deaths and vaccinations in real-time for the world. The dashboard was developed to provide researchers, public health authorities and the general public with a user-friendly tool to track the outbreak as it unfolds. Further, all the data collected and displayed on the dashboard is made freely available in a GitHub repository, along with the feature layers of the dashboard, which are now included in the ESRI Living Atlas. The dashboard served as the world leading authoritative resource on the global status of the COVID-19 pandemic, receiving between 3 – 4.5 billion usage requests per day at certain periods of the pandemic. The dashboard was featured by nearly every major media organization worldwide (shown 24/7 on CNN throughout 2020), and was relied upon by every department of the U.S. government, and various local, state and national public health departments around the world, as well as the public health research community.
